I recently set up a photo shoot to capture volleyball player @jackieannnnn in mid-air and it was important to get rid of any distracting elements in the background. Our eyes go to the brightest part of an image first, so I used a powerful studio strobe with high speed sync capability to increase my shutter speed to 1/4000 second. That froze the motion and also darkened the background - a win-win! The Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 lens gave me flexibility to zoom in or out, and the tighter I shot, the more the trees in the background went out of focus. Jackie’s expression is tack sharp in every frame thanks to face and head detection autofocus on the EOS-1D X Mark III body. Lastly, I put the camera all the way on the ground and left some dead space under her because the low angle makes her dive look even more epic. All of these elements together allowed me to create an image that puts you right in the middle of the action without any distractions."
