I grew up having heard the above rhyme from my Nana, and for the longest time I thought it was just something passed down through our family. It's not (more below). It essentially means the darker your skin, the more attention you draw, the more likely you are to encounter problems. My Nana was a proud Black woman, but like a lot people from her generation she was wary of dark-skinned people (remember, this is a woman who had to flee her home in 1922), and she herself fell on the darker end of the spectrum. With my light complexion, I've had people tell me in 100% seriousness that I should say I'm Puerto Rican rather than Black - an absolutely mind-numbing sentiment considering I'm not Latina at all. I've also had people of various races try to debate me on the characteristics of blackness, saying it's cursed, evil, and just plain ol' bad. #BlackGirlMagic is a fairly new trend in the discussion of race in America, and I'm not sure people realize how radically brilliant it is. Every time a Black person expresses love for their skin, understand, it is a direct revolt against decades of hurtful media portrayals and centuries of demonizing blackness.
