Photo by Keith Ladzinski @Keith Ladzinski / A nuclear power plant on the fringe of a wetland in Oak Harbor, Ohio. In total, the Great Lakes region has 38 nuclear facilities, the newest of which was built in 1975. These plants create carbon free energy but produce substantial nuclear waste. They pose a big question as to what to do with them once they’ve reached their productive life, which for many is already happening.
