I have been searching to find the right words that mean something during this critical, delicate time of racial inequality. I’ve heard so many people say, “I just don’t have the right words” “I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing” “What if I’m misunderstood?” well, I can relate. I just wrote the same thing in the sentence above. Here’s the deal, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try, or that I shouldn’t stand up for what is right even if I get it wrong or get discouraged because I might say the wrong thing. I very well might say the wrong thing and that’s okay. I am just going to speak my truth and reflect on my journey. I grew up in a home with both of my parents being immigrants. My mother is Cuban and my Father was born in Nicaragua and raised in Colombia. I was raised in a Latin home. While I am proud of my heritage, my culture and my family, I believe that having lighter skin has undoubtedly benefitted me. Whether it was conscious or unconcious, it was easier for me to blend in at school or professionally or whenever it benefitted me because I look white. It has never made more sense to me than it does now. I can not pretend to know what it feels like to be judged by the color of my skin, I will never know. I do promise that I will take action NOW to educate myself because what happens when we start having the tough conversations instead of blending in? What happens when we come together and recognize and celebrate our differences? What happens when we validate people of color for the inequality and injustice that they have unfairly carried? What happens when we share these stories and bring these topics to the surface instead of just pretending they do not exist? We WILL be moving in the right direction, we will see change. I know that I can be better, I’m okay with admitting that and starting from there. I would like to have a community of friends on social media where we can have open and productive conversations about racism and anti-racism and use the tools we learn from those conversations to take action. #blacklivesmatter」7月11日 5時31分 - odetteannable
