Drawn unerringly to people, especially those on the fringes of acceptable society, he depicted the intoxicating world of bars, theatres, music halls and café cabarets that he discovered in London, Paris and the south of France. In 'The pointing finger' from 1932, Burra presents us with one of his most intriguing characters resplendent in an intricate lace gown and framed by a classically inspired landscape, reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico. Behind her, vertiginous arches frame a ghost-like yet elegant companion bedecked in floor-length finery.
