The situation just never really materialized as envisioned, until last winter with my workshop group at Myakka River State Park, near Sarasota. This image was captured at 1200mm, from a safe distance from this primitive reptile. Lying flat on my belly, my tripod was positioned at ground level right at the edge of the water for a dramatic low angle view. Alligators are quite common in Florida, but it’s not every day they line up head on looking right down the lens barrel. Then a red dragonfly landed on his head, to literally cap off this fun shot. It took a couple attempts to get the alignment perfect, the alligator was watching a fisherman standing close to my camera position. I know this specimen was over 10ft, because we got a great look at him as he lunged out of the water and charged the fisherman and gulped down his fish. The super telephoto lens permitted a frame filling shot from a safe distance with no cropping. I encourage students to learn to use teleconverters and stop worrying about loss of quality. With good technique, the 600 III and 2x III combination is easily professionally sharp."
