Stewart flew 43 missions and was the grandson of a man born into slavery in Alabama. He shot down three enemy airplanes while escorting American bombers of Europe and was awarded the #DistinguishedFlyingCross.  A member of the legendary #TuskegeeAirmen, of which only 10 remain, " I just want them to be remembered as good citizens' who helped protect their country "even in the face of Discrimination." When he came home he stayed in the Air Corp and along with two other Tuskegee pilots he won the inaugural #TopGun competition. Within a year with budget cuts, he was forced out of the service.  After earning his commercial pilot license the applied for and was rejected by Pan American and TWA airlines, they didn't hire black pilots.  After entering NYU he earned his engineering degree and traveled the world and rose to the rank of Vice President of a natural gas pipeline company.   Stewart was part of a Portfolio that I photographed of World Wat II veterans for the @NatGeo Magazine, "The Last Voices of World War II" published in the June issue.
