エイプリル・ロスさんのインスタグラム写真 - (エイプリル・ロスInstagram)「I hope everyone is having an amazing 4th of July🎆🎇 Gaining our Independence from England was brave and hard fought and something to be celebrated ❤️🇺🇸 There is undoubtedly LOTS to celebrate in this country and it is an honor to compete under our flag and with USA on my chest. But today, in addition to bbqing and setting off fireworks (both of which I will be partaking in🤗), I challenge all of us to critically evaluate how much freedom we actually promote within our borders. We love to tout our freedom yet we have the highest incarceration rate in the WORLD and our justice system targets BIPOC at a rate that is grossly disproportionate. We are keeping people imprisoned at our borders in inhumane conditions indefinitely for a non-violent crime. A woman’s freedom to decide matters regarding her own body seems to always be under attack. Women who want to serve our country are being punished (and killed) for standing up to and reporting sexual harassment. And our government is doing all it can to take away voting rights from citizens, one of the ultimate pillars of freedom. I want to encourage all of us to take today to appreciate how far we’ve come, while at the same time recognizing how far we still have to go. To continually grow and become better one has to relentlessly and courageously acknowledge ones faults and weaknesses. If we don’t recognize what’s broken so that we can address it how will we manage to maintain our strength as a nation? We can both love our country and wish to improve upon our past record. Let the hard work ahead of us UNITE us and let us take PRIDE in driving progress and creating positive change that makes our country even more FREE.
