Douglass gave his seminal #WhatToTheSlavesIsFourthOfJuly speech in 1852 criticizing the independence of America that meant very little for the slaves who were being abused in the American South or the black citizens who were being systemically discriminated against in the North.

So on this 4th of July, rather than celebrating a history that was made with a blatant disregard for black and native lives, I’m celebrating the history we are making today.
