As co-host of this year’s A Capitol Fourth, I am so proud to include the many contributions of African Americans who helped build this country. I share the stories of my Great-Great-Grandfathers - one, David Carll, born a free man in NY, fought in the Colored Troop 26 Company to end slavery in the Civil War, 1863. The other, William A. Fields, was born a slave in Tennessee, and became one of the first black Representatives in the Tennessee State House, sent from Shelby County in 1885-1886.
Those are just a few examples I’ll be sharing on this Independence Day of our enduring presence as African Americans in the USA 🇺🇸
