Being able to feel someone’s soul within the movement of a melody is something I have never been able to put into words. I have been so beyond inspired by Black artists my whole life. Etta James, Tracy Chapman, Otis Redding, Eartha Kitt, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Ben Harper, Missy Elliot, Aaliyah...the list goes on. I remember feeling like an alien growing up and then being soothed and brought back down to earth by these voices. I was not alone because through their voices, I could see their insides, and they looked exactly like mine! I am forever grateful for that.
