That was more of a challenge than I care to admit. During the month her black and brown friends—little kids, kindergarteners—led the most difficult conversations in her zoom classes. “I am black and I don’t want to die.” “Slavery was different from indentured servitude.” “I have more melanin and my hair is different so it doesn’t get wet.” She was able to be frightened of some of the things they were saying and also hold space for them. My son mainly just loses his clothes. Other bigger losses will come, and with them the richness of understanding the world, the terror and wonder. Things gained: A little patience. The desire to make field recordings on her iPad. Taking slightly more flattering photos of me. Thank you to the LGBTQIA community for marching for BIPOC this month. There is so much optimism.
