Photo by @renaeffendiphoto | Built over the course of eight centuries, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, houses a prominent pilgrimage site—the shrine of Qusam Ibn Abbas, a cousin of the prophet Muhammad, who is thought to have introduced Islam to Samarkand in the 7th century. Shah-i-Zinda translates from Persian as the "Living King.” According to popular legend, Qusam Ibn Abbas was beheaded for his faith, but did not die. #followme @renaeffendiphoto for more stories of culture and humanity. #uzbekistan #travel #monuments #heritage
