Photo by @nicholesobecki | Their bags were packed, their furniture sold, and their business shuttered. After years of waiting Bidasi Munyaneza, who is blind, and his daughters Amour Kazena and Solange Nirere — all refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo — had been approved for resettlement to Australia on March 30. Then global restrictions on travel because of the coronavirus put that process on hold. After years of trauma, the delay and uncertainty of their situation hit the family hard. They’re among more than 3,000 refugees in Africa and 10,000 worldwide whose resettlement was halted temporarily by the pandemic, according to the International Organization for Migration. Now, restrictions are beginning to ease, raising hopes that Bidasi and his family may finally begin the next chapter of their life. “All I can think of is Australia, and peace,” Bidasi said. “I just want to live without fear.” Follow me on @nicholesobecki for more coverage of the Covid-19 crisis in Kenya.
