This week’s edition of #HeroesOfBrooklyn features Patricia Manwaring, co-owner and operator of @rootsbrooklyn in South Slope. Roots Cafe has always valued community, creativity, hospitality and artistry, and in light of the current public health crisis, Manwaring and her team helped turned the café into a food bank to help ease the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic in their neighborhood. With the support of regular customers and patrons, they have raised more than $35,000 and are distributing free soup and sandwiches to anyone in need, in addition to other food items, diapers, and home necessities. Since March, Manwaring and her team have distributed thousands of free meals and supported hundreds of people each week through their food pantry. Roots Cafe is now delivering food to approximately 30 families all over Brooklyn twice a week, and even opened a second food pantry in Greenpoint. The money they’ve raised continues to support these programs, and helps provide assistance to the shop’s laid-off employees. Roots Cafe’s food bank will continue operating through August, and they will continue home deliveries through the end of June. #BrooklynStrong #NBATogether
