Meet Elijah Christopher DeVaughn, Jr. (@the.trvthh). Elijah is a student, storyteller, and public servant. Born and raised in the city of Compton, California, Elijah from an early age has been proximate to matters of justice. Growing up in an underprivileged city, with a mother struggling to establish her teaching career, and with his dad in jail for the first thirteen years of his life, he could have stopped dreaming. But by the grace of God, today, he is a rising senior at Harvard University. His story #FromCompton2Harvard resonated with many three years ago on the morning television show Good Morning America, but that was only the beginning. Since then, he has dedicated his life to learning about America’s unjust past, and fighting for a more just future. He has worked for Senator Kamala Harris, the American Civil Liberties Union National Prison Project, and Governor Gavin Newsom. He is the founder of EJayyTalks, a program he created to inspire Compton’s youth. Elijah learns, inspires, and serves in the name of love. For he trusts that “Justice is what love looks like in public.” @passtheplatform • • •
In this original spoken word “All They See Is This,” Elijah grapples specifically with the viral video of Amy Cooper (a white woman) unjustly calling the police on Christian Cooper (a black man), implicitly with the killing of George Floyd, and generally with the history of state-sanctioned violence against black people in the United States of America.
