Most artists complain about not having enough time to do their work. But when COVID-19 hit, the store where I worked closed and I suddenly had plenty of time. I started treating my art like my job. When @paintthevoidproject expanded from San Francisco to Oakland, I was the first artist to paint a mural there. They told me to choose any boarded-up building, and for some reason, I felt drawn to the Blue Bottle cafe on Ninth Street. To honor the latest Black Lives Matter protests, I painted a Black goddess, surrounding her with beautiful colors. I wanted to create a mural that would bring some positivity and power to the street. The neighborhood was super-supportive and giving. The store where I used to work recently reopened. I decided I’m not going back.
