Juneteenth is the day when the last of the more 4 million people of African descent in the United States learned that the Civil War was over and that they were officially free. That occurred on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. What makes this holiday so perfect for what Black trans women are saying right now in 2020 is that we cannot be free until all of us are free. Juneteenth makes this point for us symbolically. We don’t celebrate when slaves began to be freed in because of Union armies in 1861, nor the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, nor the passing of 13th Amendment banning slavery in the United States in January 1865, nor the formal end of the Civil War in April of that same year. Rather we celebrate the day when the last of us were no longer in bondage. This is what Black trans women are declaring so intently right now: that there can be no Black Lives Matter movement worthy of the name, not to mention actual freedom for everyone, until Black trans women are included, centered and enjoy equal status in the fight for equality.
