I grew up in Texas, so I was taught about Juneteenth, but we didn’t celebrate it. Today I am seizing the opportunity to teach our kids AND to celebrate the power of our people. I want to make memories for them today so they will always remember that the God that made our ancestors stronger than those who sought to destroy us... still holds us, heals us, and empowers us to free ourselves, and to save this country. ————————————————————————
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1. Say a PRAYER. Pray for our nation, pray for our Black community, pray for our movers and shakers.
2. TAKE THE DAY OFF. While the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery, this is a symbolic date represents African American freedom, a law that slaveowners tried to withhold.
3. SIGN PETITIONS and let's tell Congress to recognize Juneteenth as a National Holiday
4. Read the EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION out loud.
5. ONLY BUY BLACK this weekend. Support Black businesses and let's close the racial wage gap!
6. CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH! Find a local or virtual celebration or protest to attend.
7. RESEARCH & EDUCATE. Read on the history. Find out what happened to the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. Talk to your family, your friends, your social media reach and spread awareness. USE YOUR VOICE.
8. Keep the momentum going. THIS AIN'T A TREND, this is a LIFESTYLE.
9. Register to VOTE.
