A JUNETEENTH PATTERN POEM
by our poetic partner @amenabee
Today we celebrate our freedom, our resilience, our joy, our resistance, our culture, and our greatness. Black history is American History.
#Juneteenth: June 19, 1865 is the day when news of the emancipation and the end of the Civil War reached the last group of slaves in the country. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, it would take over 2 years for the news to reach Texas. Even then, not all enslaved people were freed instantly.
