Tea and sittingのインスタグラム(5ftinf) - 6月20日 03時00分

...I woke up this morning knowing, for the first time in my life, that today was ‘Juneteenth’. I’d actually had to look it up this week as I didn’t know what it was: June 19th, 1865 was the date of African American freedom from enslavement in the U.S.
I also woke up with lots of questions, like why had I never been aware of this holiday before, why haven’t I ever been curious enough to find out what Hip Hop is and also...why don’t I know the real history behind my cup of tea?...
And so I’ve spent nearly all day reading about and getting my head around the evil part this country, the UK, has played in destroying and oppressing so many people and their cultures in the name of trade, and in the name of TEA! The rise of tea led to the rise of sugar, which led to mass African enslavement in the Caribbean and because China didn’t want to buy anything from this country in exchange for all the tea we wanted from them, we forced opium ( grown using forced labour in India ) into their economy, which basically made us the biggest drug pushers in the world. When China objected to it and asked us to stop, we used military force against them...
As you know, I love a cup of tea, I collect tea cups and tea pots, and loads of my compositions revolve around a cup of tea, but I realised today the importance of acknowledging the real history behind the drink we think of as our heritage...it is stolen heritage, a racist heritage and a heritage steeped in oppression and appropriation of people and their countries for our own economic gain, whilst telling us that these people are not as good as us.
@novareidofficial says ‘Get curious’ and now I know why, because if you dare to explore your white history, you find out very quickly that your white, privileged foundation is rotten, reductive and racist to the core.
I’m not saying don’t drink tea but I am saying that we all need to acknowledge the horror and pain that people suffered in bringing the treasured drink into our lives.
