I wanted to share some info about it in case you, like many, weren’t taught about this in school. It’s never too late to start educating ourselves. ⠀ ⠀ June 19th is the symbolic date commemorating the end of slavery in the US. Although the Emancipation Proclamation came two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863, many enslavers continued to hold enslaved people captive in Texas. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War that the 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were freed. Since then, Juneteenth has not only become a celebration of freedom, but also a reminder that no one is free until everybody is free. ⠀ ⠀ Today, it’s celebrated as a time for reflection, rejoicing, education, and remembrance. Juneteenth marks a day of major significance for all of us as Americans, and should be more widely recognized. I encourage all of you to read up on the meaning behind this historic day.
