Right now, there is a critical need for blood donations for patients with sickle cell disease who are at high risk of serious complications from coronavirus infection. Fighting off lung infections, like coronavirus, can cause red blood cells to form a C-shape, or sickle. When this happens, red blood cells cannot deliver oxygen throughout the patient's body. Blood transfusions from healthy donors can be a lifesaving treatment for these patients and very closely matched blood can decrease the risk of complications related to transfusion therapy, especially in patients who receive lifelong transfusions.
