It was the first time where I chose to step out of my comfort zone to stand tall and communicate that in which I believed. It was the first time that I gave credence to the fighter, the activist, within. I wanted to fight for justice. I wanted to fight for unity. I wanted to fight for love. I wanted to fight for those that couldn’t. But with such terror and tremendous insecurity, knowing that I was new to this role and felt so unsure, I drew my fingers into my palm and raised my fist. I was so initially nervous to even wear this shirt the day that I did, because I could feel every single eye on me wondering why I was wearing it. Why was I making a stand? Why would I ever question a system already in place? Why was I so “angry”? And in the moment that I took a deep breath and posted it, it received it’s first comment: “Show us your tits”. And there it was, as clear as day, the reason why I had become so small and so fearful. In any moment that I would stand tall as a woman, I would be shut down, so easily stuffed into whatever category someone needed to quickly and easily put me in. I was always too much and needed to just stay “pretty”. It’s easier to keep divided when you objectify. I share this because I want you to see how, no matter what, we must push through. Instead of choosing to allow my spirit to be so reduced, I chose to stand even more firm. And I chose to find my new family; individuals that fearlessly lead and inspire. I feel so grateful to have such incredible souls around me that keep teaching me and helping me feel that change is possible. Don’t ever allow yourself to give up. Don’t ever feel like your voice doesn’t matter or that you can’t create change by being just “one”. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel that you need to shine any less brightly than you do. When you’re heart is open and you lead with a compassionate and awakened mind, anything is possible. The world needs every single enlightened mind it can get. It took so much for me to arrive at the point where I asked my gf Nola to take this pic of me.
