Repost from @refugeediaries - Please don’t look away

This little baby has a name and a story.
I know no one wants to see this. But this shouldn’t be happening in our world to begin with. Under our watch.
In a world of so much abundance children should not be starving to death. Even though this is happening so far away from most of us, it is still happening in our world. Our global village.
I share this image reluctantly because I prefer to share stories of hope rather than despair. But the reality is hope is a luxury many are not afforded.

I share this image knowing the little girl here was one of the lucky children who got help. At the same time, I share it because not everyone is as lucky.
Her name is Areej. Areej means the fragrance of a flower. At the time this photo was taken, she was 8 months old & weighed just over 3 KG. The average weight of a baby her age is 8- 10 KG.
In this picture, Areej is malnourished.
Unless you have personally seen a severely malnourished child, it is difficult to comprehend just how horrific it is.
It is hands down the most horrifying thing I have ever seen. It shocks you to your core.
I met her at one of the sites hosting displaced Yemenis. She didn’t look like any other baby I had ever seen. I could see every bone, her ribcage so pronounced and elbows razor sharp. Her eyes and cheeks sunken and her abdomen swollen like it has been pumped with air. The skin on her body wrinkled. Her feet looked unnaturally large attached to her straw like legs.
Looking at Areej all I could do is quickly write down her information and quietly cry. I am looking at this kid knowing that she and other children in this situation are suffering immensely. If not given the necessary treatment, children who die in this way die a slow and painful death; their organs slowly malfunction and eventually stop working.
5 years of war led to the world’s worst man made humanitarian disaster. 24 million people rely on life saving aid. Over 2 million children are already acutely malnourished and require treatment. Not all of them will be reached. Not all of them will get help. Not all of them will survive.
This is the painful reality in #Yemen
