They all have young female protagonists of color, because that’s what Mazzy likes to read. One Crazy Summer (about three sisters who travel from Brooklyn to Oakland California in 1968 to find the mother who abandoned them) was the first chapter book that Mazzy couldn't put down. Front Desk was read aloud by her teacher in 4th grade and Mazzy loved it so much, she asked me to read it aloud with her again when they were finished. It deals with issues of racism, poverty and immigration and helped us have so many important discussions together.
