Re-releasing these paintings as prints has had unintended consequences. For one, I’ve been inspired to finally make a few more. But I’ve also been reminded of what I was thinking about when I made them. They were a response to a cinematic impulse. I wanted to make movies. Or commercials. Things that move, mainly. But I had to come from my place, and move in its particular direction. (Isn’t that always the work?) So I did what I knew to do. I chose cinematic proportions and hoped that good work would move me closer to an indistinct ideal. To my great delight, a museum show came almost immediately. Movies? Working on it. Closer. But in the meantime I’m reminded of one of the only methodological truths I’d ever be willing to dispense: from your best now, everything follows.
