we are born into this world not seeing the color of our own skin. we begin this life by looking into our mother’s eyes and recognizing her and ourselves as one with the earth and nothing less.
racism isn’t passed through dna. it is not spoken by your father and magically ingrained in your veins. racism is a learned trait. it’s the answer to your sorrowful “why”s when you’re told you can’t play with your best friend anymore because he’s not the same as you. it’s the news using too many black men for headlines whilst labeling every white school shooter as “troubled”. it’s the man our country put into power, using fear to turn us against one another. but it’s not just that. it’s not just them. it’s even smaller. it’s our failure to listen. our failure to learn. our failure to live with our eyes open to the injustices that have been dealt to black people for generations. it’s the desensitization to watching videos upon videos of black people brutally slain for no reason other than the melanin they carry. this is why we can’t be quiet. because it hasn’t ended with george floyd. and it won’t end if we just let it fall by the wayside.
#blacklivesmatter is not a trend. black lives should have always mattered. they should matter tomorrow and the next day and for the eons to come. so speak today for those who had their breath taken from them. and speak louder tomorrow for those who weren’t allowed to sleep peacefully. and the next day, we will scream so loud that all those we have lost will be able to hear us heavens away.
