I live on colonized and stolen lands. On Anishinaabeg (Ojibway, Potawatomi and Odawa lands) many know this place as the settler colonial state canada. My dad's family come from treaty 6, a treaty in which many Indigenous nations were starved into forcefully signing with the British crown. My dad's parents are residential school survivors (I would suggest looking up these atrocities) and my dad was part of the sixties scoop. Residential schools were meant to get rid of the Indian in the child and assimilate Indigenous peoples. I am learning the cree language and reclaiming my responsibilities to my nation. On my mom's side, she is from Jamaica. Both her parents last names can be traced to slave owners in her parish. We are descendants of slavery and Anti-Black racism is a legacy of slavery. Canada is founded on Indigenous genocide and built by stolen African peoples. Slavery existed in Canada for over 200 years. Look this up, look up the continued genocide of Indigenous peoples, read Policing Black Lives by Robyn Maynard. As all people on these lands now, I strongly believe we can do better for eachother. I strongly believe that we can do the work that is needed to recognize each other's pain and help dismantle the systems that are causing people pain. We need to care about eachother.
