What's the carbon footprint of scrolling through Instagram or buying a new pair of leggings online? @organicbasics is the first fashion brand we've seen tackle the question. Its latest project is the Low-Impact Website, a pared-down sibling to its main e-commerce site and an experiment in eco-friendly, low-impact web design. It features no videos—they require too much data, i.e. energy—and in lieu of the high-resolution photos we're used to seeing, the clothes are shown first as illustrations. Only when you "request" a real image of the garment will it appear—plus a note telling you how much CO2 that generated. The hope is that it makes you pause and consider your own online habits, because not only does the internet have a carbon footprint, but it's pretty significant. The electricity and energy required to keep it running amount to nearly 3% of the world's global emissions—roughly the same as the aviation industry.
