A still from “Fake Fruit Factory”, a 22 minutes experimental documentary film by Chick Strand in 1986. It is about young women who make papier-mâché fruit and vegetables in a small factory in Mexico. They have a gringo boss, but the factory is owned by his Mexican wife. The story is told almost entirely through close-ups: knead plaster, tear paper, apply paint, hang ornaments to dry, prepare food, care for children, count bills. The camera follows their faces and hands and the things that they produce along with the constant gossips which revealed what these young women think about men. ✷
