A team of researchers at Tulane University School of Medicine have identified two genes - TRAF3IP2 and RAB27a - that play a basic role in the formation, growth and spread (metastasis) of triple negative breast cancer - one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer there is.⁠

The researchers in collaboration with clinicians have also discovered that when RAB27a is “turned off”, it stops producing substances that cause tumor formation. The existing tumor is not growing, but can still spread a minimal amount of cancer cells to other parts of the body.⁠

When TRAF3IP2 is suppressed, the existing tumors shrink to undetectable levels and there is no spread of tumor cells to the body. The Tulane research efforts have also found that by “turning off” TRAF3IP2, the growth and spread of glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer, is also prevented.⁠
