I design beautiful experiences for Black folks that illustrate our values, our vision for the future, and move leaderful Black folks to take action. My role in this fight is to train, mobilize, and outfit organizers and activists to build the world we dream of. An example is the Stop Killing Black people and Defund Police masks that took our rallying cry and a seemingly complex idea and made it accessible through aesthetics. Last week law enforcement seized thousands of masks that I designed for activists to protect themselves. This is an example of how art and culture are critical tools in the liberation fight. Ultimately they were released due to the immense support of the people. Right now, across the country and globally, Black communities and their allies are working to stop the violent interactions that Black people disproportionately experience with militarized systems like the police , ICE and prisons. The demand to #DefundPolice aims to cut the millions of dollars spent on law enforcement everyday like the 850 million dollars given to “public safety” in the COVID stimulus packages, and instead invest in things that actually make our communities safer and healthy: affordable housing, universal quality health care, income support to those impacted by COVID, quality education ,youth programming and employment.
