In 1884, fourteen European nations met in Berlin, Germany to make decisions about dividing Africa. And guess who was not invited to the meeting? Of course the African people. There was no political leader, no delegate, nor ambassador from Africa at the Berlin Conference. It was not even considered. The Europeans decided on systematically colonizing and exploiting the continent.
Repost: @diet_prada ⚠️ Trigger Warning⚠️ The violent, public death of George Floyd has forced a confrontation of the violent colonial histories of nations around the globe. Statues and monuments of former leaders that upheld racist ideals or carried out atrocities are being re-evaluated. In the American South, tributes to Confederate leaders from the Civil War are being removed. In the UK, a bronze of a 17th century slave trader was ceremoniously relocated from a public square to the bottom of a river. In Belgium, a tribute to a King with an extremely bloody past has been defaced, and removed from public display.

King Leopold II of Belgium held the Congo Free State (today the Democratic Republic of the Congo) under personal rule from 1885 to 1908. The colonial nations of Europe allowed his claim to the country by his promise to improve the lives of the native inhabitants. He did not make good on this promise. An estimated 10 million Congolese are believed to have perished during his terroristic rule—a huge decline in the population. Many deaths were carried out in the name of labor laws over natural rubber, a main export. Failing to meet quotas could be punished by mutilation (severed hands were all too common) or even death. Disease and famine claimed the lives of many more, and the birth rate suffered immensely.

Leopold was Belgian’s longest serving ruler and as a result, there are still of statuary tributes to him throughout the country. Many have already been defaced. When will the rest be removed?
