Washi paper is hand-made, page by page. Bark from the Paper mulberry tree is boiled, and the outer bark removed. The leftover fibers are beaten until soft, and mixed together with a binding agent to make a cloudy, viscous liquid. This liquid is then carefully sieved into a special mould, and drained through  when the liquid passes through this mould, only a thin layer remains. Repeating this sieving process slowly builds up delicate layers. Paper and other items can be places in the siege during this process to add a design to the paper. Finally the washi is dried once it becomes thick enough. Having got the chance to try this process out for myself, I can confirm a lot of effort and love goes into it!!
