“My father was one of the first black quarterbacks in the NFL. That wasn’t a very popular thing at the time. He went through the ringer. Personally as a kid that’s when I saw racism because I didn’t have it first hand, but I saw my pops and how people were attacking him for being a black quarterback in the league. It wasn’t until I became a man that it became more apparent that the color of my skin was a problem for some people, whether it be walking into a certain store and someone following me around the store - for no apparent reason. Or it be getting pulled over and feeling like my life is in impossible jeopardy right now because of the way the cop is talking & demanding me to do things - again, for no apparent reason. Or it could be something as small as being a DJ on the weekend & picking up my laptop & an older white lady comes over to ask me if that’s mine. Of course it’s mine, why else would I pick it up? And so, It’s things like that we constantly have to face and react to in a wholesome manner to not fall into the stereotype.”
Powerful words from our close friend @emory_blake on his personal encounters with racism growing up + today. Listen to the full conversation at the link in my bio. We love you EB! 🖤 #tglpodcast #family #shareblackstories #blacklivesmatter #realtalk
