I was disgusted when I saw the video of Ahmaud Arbery being murdered. I was shaken to my core as I have been far too many times in my life seeing so many displays of blatant racism in our society.
Please allow me to state this obvious truth: I am a white man and will NEVER know what it’s like to walk a single step as a black man in this world, and by no means am I pretending to understand the black experience in this song.
When I see another human being treated so inhumanly, I wither in empathy and turn to the only outlet that I have ever known to help process these feelings. For me, that is music.
I never want to receive a dollar personally for this song. Instead, I would like any & all proceeds to go to black causes for as long as I am around.
I am simply here to listen, learn and speak up when encouraged by the black community to do so. It is truly incumbent upon us all to create the kind of change needed so that we can live in a more just & equitable world.
The fact does not escape me that we are living on land that was taken from one indigenous culture and our society was built on the backs of another. We have reaped all the benefits and never truly paid back the cost.
If you are white, please talk with other white people about how the injustice must stop and try to inject these issues into every conversation so that we can begin to make the massive changes needed.
Let’s open our eyes to the ways in which our society has systematically made it MUCH more difficult for a black person to enjoy the same types of freedoms that white people do.
To the countless families who lost someone in such a horrific fashion: I will never know your pain. I can only hope that you find some sort of comfort in knowing there are those of us demanding that, from this point on, nobody else ever goes through the incredible loss you have already suffered.
