I grew up with prejudice: I know it Very well.

As a kid, when I lived in majority Caucasian neighborhoods, I was called the N word; and when I grew up in majority African-American communities, I was called Honkey (the 1970s-1980s version of the N word for white people). No matter where I grew up, I was a minority and The Other.

I’ve been chased by a car and had bottles thrown at me while the occupants shouted the N word. I’ve had people I’ve known for years pick a race for me, and compartmentalize me into their definition of what I should want or be, even though I don’t identify by any race other than Human.

I know what prejudice looks like, and what it feels like. I can recognize it both in me and around me.

In this turbulent moment, America is re-examining the effect of racial prejudice in policing. To deny there is ever any prejudice in policing or anywhere else is to deny reality.

To claim that all or most police (or the entire systems of police law enforcement) are prejudiced is not consistent with what I have seen working with these fine men and women for well over a decade now.

We all need to examine our prejudices. We all need to confront and correct them.

In terms of triage, yes: the needs to correct prejudice against our African American citizens must be addressed at all levels and in all reasonable ways - and it should be addressed now.

But in doing so, I hope we will not succumb to other prejudices.

The peaceful protesters are true Americans: as are the law-abiding police officers who celebrate those rights and protect their safety.
