Reading is a beckoning, a summons, tearing at calcified beliefs. Audre Lorde, Hilton Als, Maya Angelou, Margo Jefferson, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Claudia Rankine and so many more have stalked their solitude and their streets that we may question our own unseeing. In this time of vital consciousness raising, I turn again to them. Pulling old books and new and asking what more they have to say, what more I should know, should do. What books, essays, poems, music and films have influenced you, pushed at you and spoken painful truths?
