When I saw the horrific video of George Floyd being held down and suffocated by the police I was heartbroken, sickened and angry. We have avoided dealing with the deep seeded racism in this country for too long. I am reconsidering everything I thought I knew about racism in America. Just saying or thinking “I’m not racist, this isn’t about me” isn’t good enough anymore. This is OUR problem. In the last few days I have also seen some things that give me hope. Speeches like Killer Mike’s have brought me to tears. Seeing police officers taking knees, and watching peaceful protestors lead with love and compassion instead of adding to the violence. This ceremony pictured above happened in the middle of the ocean almost 3000 miles away from Minneapolis where George Floyd was murdered. This is what I find most inspiring. The ripple effects of his death are being felt around the world. This is a humanitarian issue. And for me, it’s not debatable. It’s time to take actions to help stop the spread of this centuries old thinking. I will be learning, listening and donating to these organizations. The time for change is now.
