Black women are 5x more likely to die in childbirth than white women. In NYC, it’s 12x. There has been a 25 year increase in maternal death among Black Americans.
It’s easy to see numbers, and miss the story:
These “numbers” are actual Black women-Mothers-who die AVOIDABLE deaths because of unconscious bias racism. These are women-Mothers-who do not get to see their babies grow up.
(please sit with that for a sec.)
Numbers are also numbers and they point to an incontestable conclusion: Racism and bias in medicine are rampant.
So what can we do?
We can begin by celebrating-and supporting-Latham Thomas, founder of @mamaglow, a master birth doula, doula trainer-with particular emphasis on training doulas in underserved communities-social justice warrior, bestselling author and world reknown wellness leader who is revolutionizing the maternal health field. Her work as a doula-coupled with her work in removing systemic violence and racism in health care–means she is creating the path and increasing the odds for Black mothers to LIVE and experience joy.
Because as @laylafsaad put it this very morning, “Black LIFE matters.”
On a personal note, Latham holds a sacred place in my heart because she was holding my hand when I became a mother for the second time ♥️
Please consider dedicating your action work today to educating yourself about the Black Maternal health crisis, and about systemic racism and bias in medicine. Google is the friend you should ask on this one.
And thank you to @nowthisnews for highlighting Latham’s work in actively addressing the black maternal health crisis.
