I spent this weekend with my family, away from social media. Coming back online to see the scenes, especially in the United States, is truly heartbreaking. I am aware that due to my upbringing in Monaco, I have been very privileged and consequently had very limited exposure to racial injustice and the systemic oppression of minorities. Although I will never be able to fully comprehend the pain that so many victims of racism are going through, I am devastated by the things I see and hear. It should be a priority for people with influence to leverage their following and try to be a part of the solution. To all of my followers and fellow sportsmen: we need to take a strong stance against racism and we need to do it now. I find it deeply saddening that in the time it took us to achieve some of the greatest things like flying people to the moon or inventing the internet, we have failed to solve what should be considered one of the most basic forms of human decency: equality. We need to fight against racism. We can all do more. After taking the time to research and think, I understand that a key to this is education. The only way to increase understanding is to educate ourselves on the issues. I decided to support the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund with a €10,000 donation to help them with their efforts in public education and their peaceful fight to end segregation. I am not an expert but I think we can all find platforms to support in our own ways. Please let us seek out the causes to support, and continue the peaceful fight against racism in our society.
