Christo, the artist who wrapped the world, has passed away aged 84.
With his wife and collaborator Jeanne-Claude, the Bulgarian-born artist pursued ambitious and visionary temporary projects. They enveloped iconic landmarks in fabric, including Berlin's Reichstag, and transformed landscapes with vast sculptural interventions.
Christo’s commitment to the ephemeral, vigorous perseverance and aptitude for negotiation brought astonishing art to the masses and festooned their world with a new way of seeing, even just for a few moments. As the artist told Wallpaper* in 2018, ‘I sketch and devise and create because I enjoy the physicality of it. It’s built in my system. Working makes me want to keep walking – even in the wind and the rain.’
