I know what normally happens. Memories fade, the media finds a new distraction and then history eventually repeats itself. How many times have we seen this story? How many more times do we need to see it? There are so many cases of racial and social injustice it’s hard to keep up. What happened to the thousands of immigrant children that were detained and separated from their families before the pandemic consumed every moment of our day? Guess what, they’re still there, Covid and all. I’m tired, and I don’t have to navigate a minefield of racism every day. We talk about a better world for our children. We donate to wildlife funds, help save rainforests, push for policies to reverse the effects of global warming, all of which are worthy causes. But what about the suffering and plight of our fellow man? If equality wins, we all win. It’s time to get uncomfortable. The old guard has to change. You should be able to walk down the street without sensing fear in a strangers face because you’re a person of color. You should be able to shop in a store without the shop owner keeping an extra close eye on you, because you’re a person of color. You should be able to see a cop and feel respect and admiration because they have dedicated their lives to protect and serve, instead of wondering if you’ll ever see your family again because you’re being pulled over for a “traffic violation”, because you’re a person of color.
