This week, a video of the brutal murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis circulated on social media, bringing into focus once again the systemic injustice against black and brown people everywhere.

I wanted to share other videos of two children, Zianna Oliphant and @keedronbryant which made me stop and reflect and listen this week.

The lyrics for twelve year old Keedron’s song, I’m a Young Black Man, have become a rallying cry following the senseless killing of Floyd, an innocent black man, a few days ago, while phone cameras were rolling and people were begging the police officer to stop. It went on for more than 8 minutes. He was only arrested yesterday and several other police officers who were complicit are still free.

But of course this is not the first time a young person has had to sacrifice their innocence in the wake of police violence against black people in the United States. Zianna’s video is from 2016 when she spoke up in the Charlotte, North Carolina City council following another brutal murder. “We are black people and we shouldn't have to feel like this. It's a shame that our fathers and mothers are killed, and we can't even see them any more," she said in tears. "It's a shame we have to go to their graveyard." She was only nine.

Please watch and listen to what they are saying. They simply want to have a fair chance at success in the world we all share. The current system is so heavily weighted against young people of colour that their hopes and dreams are dampened even before they have become adults. It is heartbreaking and unfair. They have shown bravery by speaking out as we all must, regardless of colour, creed or politics. I stand in solidarity with George Floyd and all of the black and brown people who are continually traumatised by this illegal violence. #istandwithgeorgefloyd
