Pineapple harvesting in Lanai, Hawaii - It’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to pay tribute to and celebrate the generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history. The month of May commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in 1843. It also marks the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 — the majority of the workers who laid the tracks being Chinese immigrants.
As the month comes to a close, I focus on the influx of Japanese workers, along with the Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Portuguese, and African American laborers who were recruited by Hawaiian plantation owners in the mid-19th century, permanently changing the face of Hawaii. This period of immigration to Hawaii (and the rest of the United States) came to an end in 1924, as the US Congress passed the Asian Exclusion Act, barring East Asians from immigrating to the country. To this day most of America’s food supply is harvested by migrant seasonal farm workers. #asianamerican #asianamericanheritagemonth #pineappleharvesting
