The senseless murder of George Floyd by a police officer, the ongoing events in Minneapolis, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Christian Cooper in Central Park and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia. These incidents are not “surprising” or “shocking,” they are symptoms of the insidious and systemic racism on which our country was built and through which these injustices are committed and perpetuated every single day, not just when they happen to be caught on camera. These systems are upheld by inaction, by white silence. We (myself/my non-POC followers) need to acknowledge our privilege and how we continue to benefit from these systems of racism in order to shut them down. We also need to acknowledge the ways we implicitly and explicitly uphold and reinforce these systems every day. Silence is not an option. Look inwards & educate yourself, educate your family, share, listen, donate, show up, call lawmakers and vote. Most importantly, don’t call the police unless absolutely necessary. They may make YOU feel safe, but that is a privilege of your whiteness that is never afforded to POC. My heart aches for those in pain, for those grieving. We need to do better.
