At the crossroads of a musical revolution and advances in audio equipment like reverb tanks and tremolo arms came a movement of instrumentally-driven music known as Surf Rock. Characterized by a medium-fast tempo, rapid alternate picking on guitars and the excessive mixture of “wet” sounds — achieved by Fender Spring Reverb units — Surf Rock quickly become a distinct style of the burgeoning rock and roll scene. Artists like The Ventures, Duane Eddy and Dick Dale led the charge in capturing the sound of Southern California and shared it with the world; and to this day, hits like “Miserlou” “Wipe Out” and “Surfin’ Bird” continue to embody the sound of the ’60s.
