A policeman named Michael. ..... #miniBFFs of many different skin tones gather together to hear me read. How do I lead in this moment on this exact night? How do I talk about policemen four minutes after reading posts from @stewartdantec and @josaxton and @bethmoorelpm and many others about another black man, George Floyd, murdered by policemen? ..... I take every leadership role in my life very seriously, but those #miniBFFs? What I say to them matters. So I’ll say the same thing to you that I said to those children: good policemen are some of the best people. Honoring the police who are honorable matters. And black lives matter. Calling the truth the truth matters. Standing up for justice matters. ..... I thank God for the policemen and women, some I know and love here in Nashville, who protect, honor, and serve our nation. And I will not be quiet about the racial injustice that my black neighbors and friends, some I know and love here in Nashville, have to face daily. DAILY. ..... I feel sad all the way in my bones. I can’t even imagine what my black brothers and sisters feel. Or what policemen feel. Or what you are feeling. But these are days for grieving. The murder of George Floyd is grievous and wrong. ..... Tonight my prayers are with his family, with my black friends who are exhausted and scared, and with all my friends parenting the next generation. I’m right here with you, reading to my #miniBFFs once a week, hoping it does a little to make your parenting load a bit lighter.
