“By all the rules I shouldn’t have pulled through — but I did. You were responsible for that. I’m convinced of it. All line soldiers have someone watching over them, or so we believe. In my case it was you.” — Harry Macdonald to Jacquelyn Robinson, 1944.
Recently, I’ve been reading through old letters that I’ve received over the years and realized how meaningful and precious letter writing is. It’s beautiful how much of a person’s soul comes through when putting pen to paper and how much of a difference holding a tangible note makes on the receiver. Though gatherings are limited on this #MemorialDay, for me, reading letters from war is a way of continuing to honor those we lost. Thank you Harley Rustad for sharing your grandfather’s letters and passing his story on.
